Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – November 10, 2014

A big thank you to all the parents who joined us on our class field trip Friday to Red Clay.  You were a huge help! 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are studying Thanksgiving and pilgrim life this week.  We will be reading The First Thanksgiving, The Littlest Pilgrim, Pilgrims of Plymouth, Thankful World, and many others!

·        We will be working on the long e sound this week.

Grammar:

·        We will be working on one and more than one.  

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on compare and contrast this week.  

Spelling:

Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

·        This week in math we are working on addition. These skills will include adding 10, doubles, making ten and adding three numbers.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – October 13, 2014

I hope everyone had a wonderful fall break!  I cannot send home your child’s report card without a scheduled conference.  Please let me know if you can attend at your scheduled time.  Thank you!

Reading and Phonics:

  • We will be learning about Christopher Columbus and Community Helpers this week.  We will be reading Christopher Columbus, Officer Buckle and Gloria, Fire, Fire, Firefighters, When I Grow Up and many others!
  • We will be working on the long a sound this week.

Grammar:

  • We will be working on common and proper nouns.  

Comprehension:

  • We will be working on cause and effect this week.  

Spelling:

Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about apples this week.  We will be reading Amazing Apples, Apples A to Z, Apples, Up, Up, Up! It’s Apple Picking Time, The Apple Pie Tree and many others!

·        We will be studying the diagraphs sh and th this week.

Grammar:

·        We will be working on nouns.  

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on cause and effect this week.

M-Gym and Music T-Computer W-Music and Library Th-Gym and Library (check out)   “Arkansas author, David Sargent, Jr., will be visiting Yates with his furry friends (dogs) on Thursday, October 2 at 2:30 in the gym.  He will have his books with him to sell and he has agreed to autograph them.  Each book costs $7.00 (tax included).  An order form was sent home.  Contact Ms. Johnson, the librarian, if you need another one: jjohnson@clevelandschools.org or send a note with your child.  Parents are invited to attend.”

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be doing an author study on Eric Carle this week.  We will be reading Rooster’s Off to See the World, The Mixed Up Chameleon, A Grouchy Ladybug, Pancakes, Pancakes, The Foolish Tortoise and many others!

·        We will be studying the short e sound this week.

Grammar:

·        We will be working on telling sentences.

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on realism and fantasy.

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about animals and their habitats this week.  We will be reading many different books like Deep in the Jungle, How Leo Learned to Be King, Animal Habitats, A House is a House for Me, and many others!

·        We will be studying the inflected ending –s and –ing this week.

Grammar:

·        We will be working on word order in sentences.

Spelling:

Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

·        This week in math we are starting to work on simple addition by making numbers 6-9.  Please continue working on ordering numbers with your child at home and counting to 120.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – August 25, 2014

This week we will be focusing on farms.  We will have a first grade farm day on Friday, August 29th. Please send your child dressed in farm attire for a fun filled farm day on Friday!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about farms and farm animals this week.  We will be reading many different books like Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type, Milk Makers, Farmer Duck, Barn Dance, Rosie’s Walk, The Little Red Hen, The Three Little Pigs and many others!

·        We will be working on the short i sound.

Grammar:

·        We will continue to study sentences; including naming parts of sentences and sentence structure.

Spelling:

Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

·        This week in math we are comparing numbers and putting numbers in order.  Please have your child practice counting at home.  We want to be able to count to 120 by the end of the year.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – February 10, 2014

Don’t forget your child needs to bring their valentine’s box and cards for the class by or on Friday for our party.  Thank you!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are learning about Valentine’s Day this week.  We will be reading Valentine’s Day, Froggy’s First Kiss, Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose, Happy Valentine’s Day Mouse, The Biggest Valentine Ever, Love, Splat and many others! 

·        We will work on long a: ai and ay.

 

Grammar:

·        We will work on Adjectives this week.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on drawing conclusions while reading.   

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.
